Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Manchester United future is in doubt after walking out of Old Trafford hours before the club’s final Premier League game of the season against Charlton on Sunday.
Initial reports indicated the 29-year-old Dutch striker had been angered by once again being left on the bench by United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
“We can confirm Ruud van Nistelrooy has gone home,” said a United statement.
“The club will be making no further comment as we are concentrating on today’s game.”
Van Nistelrooy arrived at the game expecting to play up front in the absence of England international Wayne Rooney, who is sidelined with a broken foot, only to discover teenager Giuseppe Rossi had been selected ahead of him and was scheduled to make his full league debut.
It is believed that van Nistelrooy was initially named as a substitute, along with long-term injury victims Paul Scholes, making a surprise return to first team action after an eye problem, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Van Nistelrooy was subsequently photographed storming out of the ground and into his car, clutching his boots in his hand.
The incident follows continuous rumors about his United future and he may well have played his final game in United colors.
The Dutch international’s relationship with manager Ferguson has been strained since the end of February when he was controversially left out of United’s League Cup Final victory over Wigan Athletic in Cardiff.
Frenchman Louis Saha came in and has been a permanent fixture in the team apart from a spell on the injury sidelines.
The end of the road for Ruud?..maybe it was because of the newsearlier in the day that he was being used as a swap deal for Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres……
