Tottenham lost out to Newcastle for the services of Damien Duff because they would not up their bid of £7million for the Irish winger.
Newcastle on the other hand match Chelsea’s evaluation of the player at £10million and thus Damien Duff is now a Magpie.
The 27-year-old Republic of Ireland international passed a medical on Tyneside, while the first team were on their way back from Norway after beating Lillestrom to book their place in the UEFA Cup.
Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder had this to say regarding the capture of the talented Irishman:
“I would think it will excite our fans as well. I played for Newcastle - admittedly a long time ago - but we had the likes of Chrissy Waddle playing in that team that I played in and (the fans) love ball-players who can go past players and get crosses in and Damien is that type of player.”
Roeder, who revealed Duff had been given “rave reviews” from international team-mates Shay Given and Stephen Carr as well as former Chelsea colleague Scott Parker, hopes the capture of Duff will only be the start of a busy summer of transfer activity at St James’ Park.
I think it’s an exciting buy for Newcastle, i remember the days of old not so many years ago when there were some really good players at Tyneside…Ginola,Faustino Asprilla,Shearer,Keegan (manager),Gillespie…ahhh those beautiful days especially the tie between Liverpool and Newcastle, i remember one of those classic games where Newcastle lost 4-3, that for me has been one of the best games i’ve seen..great entertainment value indeeed.
Hopefully with the arrival of Duff, Newcastle can look foward to attracting even more quality players and with Owen back later on it would be an exciting team to watch..i hope.
