Argentinean midfielder Javier Mascherano is said to be Sir Alex’s latest target to beef up his midfield.
It all looked seemingly unlikely that Man Utd would sign the 22-year-old, as thier main taget has always been Tottenham’s Michael Carrick.
But with Spurs demanding a fee that Utd feel is too big, it might just be that Javier Mascherano will be Man Utd’s first buy of the season.
Mascherano’s agent arrived in Manchester yesterday to discuss a possible move with United manager Sir Alex Ferguson as revealed by the Daily Mirror today for a suggested fee of £16million. The 22-year-old defensive-minded midfielder currently plays his football for Brazilian side Corinthians who occupy bottom spot in the country’s top league after a disastrous drop in form by the team’s standards.
That’s something i don’t understand…if they are willing to fork out £16million for the Argentinian, why not add ‘just’ £1million to match Spurs evaluation of Carrick?
Futhermore, with the exception of Gabriel Heinze, United has had bad fortune with all their South American buys (Forlan,Veron,Kleberson).

I just blogged about it.
Interest in Mascherano is still on, despite the Carrick buy. SAF believes MC alone wouldn’t suffice in beefing up his midfield, as he looks to boot Alan Smith back where he belongs: as a striker.
Got get him, Alex… we want Mascherano.
