It is now official, Steve Mcclaren has appointed Chelsea’s John Terry as the new England captain ahead of Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard after previous captain David Beckham stepped down on Jult 1st 2006.
“Choosing a captain is one of the most important decisions a coach has to make,” new coach Steve McClaren said. “I’m certain I’ve got the right man in John Terry. I’m convinced he will prove to be one of the best captains England has ever had.”
I think Mcclaren got it right, Gerrard would have been a good choice too, but maybe a defender gets to view the game from a better perspective than a midfielder? and a good perspective is what’s needed when your captain of your national team.
Terry is tenacious and always fight for every ball and i haven’t seen him fake an injury or dive before (yea..this type of things are going on and is a disgrace to the beauiful game).
In response to his appointment this is what Terry had to say “It is the ultimate honor to be the captain of your country and I am very proud to be given this great opportunity.”
McClaren picked Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard - Terry’s main rival for the captaincy - as the vice captain.
Terry’s first match as England captain will be Wednesday’s friendly against Greece at Old Trafford.
Cheers to John Terry, may he do England proud, i’m sure Chelsea fans are happy today! ![]()
