Earlier in the day Man Utd thrashed Fulham 5-1, so it was down to the reigning Champions Chelsea to respond to that…and respond they did with a 3-0 demolition of 10-man Manchester City.

It had an “England” feel to the game as John Terry and Frank Lampard got on the scoresheet for Chelsea as they did for England against Greece earlier in the week and they did it in exact order too!..Terry with a header after 11 minutes and Lampard with a typical ‘lampard style’ goal at the edge of the area after 26 minutes.

In fairness though Man City were not a second-rated team in this fixture, they did perform well but i guess luck wasn’t on their side because if you ask me, i think Chelsea didn’t play as well as i know they can, you can just feel that they could go on another gear if they wanted or had to, but nonetheless they got the result they needed.

It was a nightmare debut for City’s Corrardi as he was red-carded for a silly 63rd-minute lunge on Essien, who was booked for pulling his hair in retaliation.

Stuart Pearce tried his best to instill more bite into City’s attacking play by bringing on Darius Vasell and Paul Dickov into the game but it was not to be as a brilliantly Terry-marshalled defence stood the test well and denied any of them from putting a blemish on Chelsea’s final result.

Didier Drogba got into the scoring act as well with a superb stooping header from a Wayne Bridge cross, Bridge being recalled to Chelsea after his loan sting with Fulham last season also impressed and one wonder if they need Ashley Cole afterall?

Final score Chelsea 3, Man City 0 and after the first round of games Manchester United sit on top of the league with their superior goal difference, but for how long? we might just get the answer as soon as Wednesday ;)
