It has got to be a major blow for Pires as he has been ruled out for most of the season after tearing the cruciate ligament in his left knee in the friendly game against Real Madrid in Cadiz.
It will also be a blow to his new club Villarreal who had hoped the 32-year-old Frenchman would be a prominent figure for them this season.Pires moved from Arsenal to Villarreal in the summer on a two-year deal and will now miss a large chunk of that deal due to this injury.
It’s always a sad thing to lose any player to such an injury and we can only hope for the best for Pires, maybe he can take hope in the knowledge that Man Utd’s Alan Smith is up and running again after suffering a double-leg break late last season, he improved and recovered beyond everyone’s expectation and is said he will start alongside Rossi in Man Utd Reserves’s game against Preston today.
