The Premiership has begun and i now feel alive again! This will be footyblog.net’s first ever “Team Of The Week” as i make a selection of the top 11 players that performed well in their respective role with their club(s).

I will go with the standard 4-4-2 formation and the team of the week will be based on the English Premier League only unless otherwise stated.

I can’t be 100% sure that i will watch every single Premiership game in the coming months, but i will do my best indeed. So here we go, our very first Team Of The Week:

GoalKeeper: Thomas Sorensen

I think Aston Villa’s Sorensen wins this hands down.Martin O’ Neill will be pleased that his goalie
did extremely well to keep Arsenal at bay and earn Villa a 1-1 draw.Taking into account that Arsenal did have 11 shots on target.

RightBack:Gary Neville

It was a pity that he had to be substituted early on, but when he was on the field he was Captain marvel as he led United to a 5-1 win over Fulham, his foward runs and trackback to defence at his age makes him an important asset..not to mention experience, however this role was a toss up between Wes Brown and G.Neville, Brown played well too but i’ll give the captain the nod.

Centre-back: John Terry

Do i need to say much? England’s new Captain continued where he left off..scoring goals!
His calm and assured defending ensured Chelsea didn’t conceed a goal in the opening game.

Centre-back: Chris Morgan

Chris Morgan was one of the reasons why Liverpool only managed a draw at Sheffield United, his rock solid displays frustrated the likes of Bellamy & Fowler, ironically he was the one who gave the penalty away, but overall he deserved his place in this team.

LeftBack: Wayne Bridge

Ouch..this again was a toss up between 2 players, Wayne Bridge of Chelsea and Patrice Evra of Man Utd.Evra deserved to be here but i’ll go with Bridge because i feel he had more defending to do compared to Evra.Wayne Bridge’s performance on the left would have made Jose wondered if he needed Ashley Cole afterall? and now with the signing of Khalid Boulahrouz confirmed it might just be that Jose won’t be too intrested in Cole.Bridge’s foward runs ensured Man City’s defenders had a torid time and his cross was met by Drogba for Chelsea 3rd goal.

Right-wing: Cristiano Ronaldo

He was booed by the Fulham fans throughout the game but he didn’t bother and instead linked up with Rooney to score a fantastic half-volley, a goal that was not as easy to score as he made it look, the control and accuracy was good and this has to be the best possible start he could wish for.

Central midfield: Ivan Campo

Anyone that scores past England’s number 1 goalie from 40 yeards deserves to be in.

Central midfield: Michael Essien

Essien played extremely well for Chelsea and made it look so easy, one wonder if Makelele and Ballack will get into the team after that display! His defensive mind made sure Chelsea was always protected from the midfield area and his attacking mind also came to the fore as he was involved in Lampard’s goal

Left-wing: Lee Bowyer

The bad boy of british footy has shwon glimpses of what he’s made of.Bowyer was involved in all three of West Ham’s goals.

Striker: Nwankwo Kanu

A late capture by Pompey, and what a player that have in Kanu!
The giant Nigerian came off the bench, headed home two goals, won a penalty, missed the penalty and then the rebound to round off an eventful and successful day’s work for Portsmouth as they shocked Blackburn.

Striker: Wayne Rooney

It just had to be Rooney, it is a total shame that we won’t be seeing him for sometime as he serve his 3 games suspension handed down to him by the FA.He scored 2 goals in the game against Fulham and set Ronaldo up on two occasions only for Ronaldo to miss one of it.

There you go the Top 11 according to me.What do you think? who should/could have been in too?
