It’s early days yet, but Manchester United has made their intention clear to the rest of the Premiership with a comfortable 3-0 over Charlton at the valley thanks to goals from Fletcher,Saha and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
From the first whistle United were on the go, starting with what looked like a 4-4-1-1 formation
with Giggs just behind Saha with J.S Park on the left and Cristiano on the right. In defence there was the ever present Rio and Silvestre while Wes Brown got the rightback slot after Neville fialed a fitness test and the impressive Patrice Evra marshalled the left hand side.
That leaves us with the middle where Scotland captain Darren Fletcher and Irish O’ Shea were.

As anticipated Ronaldo received jeers everytime he touched the ball, but if you ask me i think he has played better in the past two games than i’ve ever seen. He’s beginning to be a team player with passes instead of fancy footwork and discipline when he was man-handled and he actually is stopping his diving antics!
But all that aside the story today was Rooney and Scholes begin their 3 match suspensions dubiously handed to them by the FA, Charlton must have thought that this was their day but it was not be as a resolute United side sprung a suprise with a magnificance performance on the wet slippery surface of the Valley.
The first 25 minutes of the game was actually quite boring, but it did light up after that with chances for United from a Giggs freekick, a superb Ronaldo shot that hit the bar and a J.S Park shot that was saved by the Charlton keeper.
The second half was much better (at least if your a neutral or a United fan) with chances on both ends but it was Darren Fletcher who made the breakthrough in the 49th minute after a slip by Jonathan Fortune, Fletcher cooly dispatched a powerful shot into goal after side stepping two defenders. The goal seemed to bring life into the game and United continued to pile the pressure on the home team but they had to wait until the 80th minute to receive their reward when Louis Saha seemed to score out of the blue, it was actually a mistake by the Charlton defenders who were so focused on Ronaldo that it left a complete gap for Saha to exploit and exploit he did with his second goal of the season.
The goal meant that United could now afford to give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a run in the park but he decided to do more than that when he scored United’s third goal in the 90th minute.
Final score Man Utd 3 Charlton 1
What made it even sweeter for United fans was the news that Mark Viduka has scored a late injury time winner for Middlesbrough at the Riverside to hand them a famous win over Chelsea.
The Premiership champions looked to be on their way to another victory courtesy of Andriy Shevchenko’s goal but strikes from Emmanuel Pogatetz (80) and Mark Viduka in injury time turned the game on its head.
Final score at the Riverside was 2-1 to Middlesbrough, what a day for debutant coach Gareth Southgate!
