Fabien Barthez has called it a day and announced his retirement from football with immediate affect.
Goalkeepers tend to carry on till at least the age of 38 but Barthez,35, has cited family problems for his decision.
“I am starting a new life,” Barthez said. “I will continue to enjoy myself … but without football.
“Some goalkeepers continue until 37 or 38,” the 35-year-old Barthez added. “But I needed a human adventure, something like that.”
The former Manchester United goalkeeper quit Marseille prior to the World Cup and hoped his close friendship with Toulouse coach Elie Baup would facilitate a move back to his hometown club, but the French team did not want to risk losing promising goalkeeper Nicolas Douchez.
At Man Utd he had his moments of brilliance especially in a game against Liverpool where he produced a superb save to deny Dietmar Hamann a goal.
But his extreme eccentricity haunted him in the end notably his horror against West Ham in the FA Cup when he practically allowed Paolo Di Canio to score a goal after mistakenly thinking that he was offside, Ferguson was furious and that was the end of Barthez who joined Marseille in the 20003/04 season from Utd.
He will be remembered for many things but most probably this will remain in the minds of all his fans…when you got to go..you just got to go..
