Chelsea and Man Utd played their 8th premier league game last night and both teams chalked up a win but United mantain their position at the top of the pile with some brilliant football displays especially in the second half against Wigan.
Wigan’s Paul Jewel would have been delighted when his side took the lead as early as the 5th minute when Leighton Baines completely smashed in a freekick which Edwin Van der Sar had no hope of keeping out.Wigans fans were jubilant, and they should be at that moment as memories of United’s double 4-0 thrashing of the team last season is fresh in their minds.
United gave everything they had to claw back into the game and they were unlucky on many many occassions, especially Wayne Rooney who saw his effort hitting the crossbar which continues his goal drought.Cristiano Ronaldo (ankle) and Gary Neville (calf) were not in the team as they nursed their injuries suffered while on international duty.
Without Ronaldo United seemed a little lacking in the creative department but all of that was to change in the second half when Sir Alex introduced a not so fully fit Ryan Giggs into the game in place of Wes Brown.Giggs did what he does best - torment defenders.United finally levelled the score in the 62nd minute when Nemanja Vidic headed in his first goal for the club courtesy of a beautifully flighted in corner by Giggs.
The goal seemed to spark United to live with Rooney,Saha and Solskjaer all coming close but there was to be misery for the Wigan defence when Saha acrobatically scored the second goal for United.
From then on Manchester United completely dominated the game and the icing on the cake came in the 90th minute when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer showed agility and strength to score United’s third goal.
Final score Man Utd 3 Wigan 1
United stayed on top on goal difference as Chelsea also managed a slim 1-0 win againt Reading.
The bad news for Chelski is that they might miss both of their goalkeepers after Petr Cech and Cudicini suffered injuries with John Terry (of all people) playing the part of the goalie towards the end of the game.
