Nemanja Vidic,Saha and Cristiano Ronaldo were all on target as Manchester United celebrated the 20th anniversary of Sir Alex Ferguson being in charge of the club, and they did it in style.
The scoreline is flaterring but i must say United didn’t play in top gear, they look quite ordinary and not much of flashes of brilliance were shown, except maybe Gary Neville’s inkling desire to get on the scoresheet to impress Fergie.
Portsmouth travelled to Old Trafford without the injured Sol Campbell and Glen Johnson in defence and it was evident as early as the 2nd minute when Louis Saha scored from the spot after Wayne Rooney was brought down by Dejan Stefanovic, one goal up and United were cruising and even though Sir Alex seemed like he couldn’t be bothered with all the fuss of him being in charge for 20 years the players had other ideas and were desperate to hand their manager a win especially since their shock defeat in the Champions League on wednesday.
United played pressing,counter-attacking brand of football that ensured their less illustrious opponents were pinned into their own half with David James making a string of excellent saves to save the blushes of Pompey who in all honesty could have gone home with an even worst result.
In the 10th minute Cristiano Ronaldo fizzed and absolutely beautiful freekick into the net, James had no chance in the world of saving that shot, it was going to be United’s day afterall.Nemanja Vidic scored his first goal at Old Trafford with a nicely placed header when the impressive captain
Gary Neville floated in a cross, Neville himself was unlucky not to score as his ex-international teammate James produced saves from everything Neville threw at him.
The season is beginning to shape up to be a two horse race for the title,Arsenal could possibly still make the cut if they begin to be a little more clinical in their finishes.
Yet another day in the office for Man Utd as they looked foward to tommorrow to see if their nearest rivals Chelsea can keep up the pace, this was also United’s last game in Old Trafford before the much anticipated showdown with Chelsea towards the end of the month.
Final score Man Utd 3 -Pompey 0
