It was a night of two friendly fixtures for Man Utd with a split squad as they completed the last pre-season games before facing Reading this sunday.
Man Utd beat Dunfermline 4-0 with the suprise inclusion of Paul Scholes who played the full 90 minutes,Owen Hargreaves is unlikely to start on Sunday after playing 65 minutes and then having an ice pack applied to the knee which has been afflicted with tendinitis.
But coach Mike Phelan, who took charge of the team at East End Park, held out some hope that Hargreaves’ big moment is not far away: “We decided he needed more than the 45 minutes he got last week, but he is fit and healthy and ready to play.”
Chris Eagles, Giggs, Wayne Rooey (2) were on target for Utd and it looks like Scholes and Hargreaves could play off each other while Eagles is really starting to knock on Ferguson’s door to be included in the match against Reading.
Over at Belfast, Nani stole the show with a superb goal and his exibition celebration as Ferguson was not present having already warned the young portugese to curb his backflips to prevent injuries, while his portugese mate Cristiano Ronaldo did not play as he pulled out with a slight ankle injury.
It took just five minutes for United to seize the initiative, Lee Martin snapping up possession following Colin Nixon’s mistake, then floating over a cross which Frazier Campbell expertly volleyed home.
Campbell has impressed during United’s pre-season campaign, even if the striker will have to wait until the Reds venture into the Carling Cup next month before he tastes senior action again.
