Well, what a beautiful day of footy it was today, the top teams were on display and while Arsenal and Chelsea grabbed all three points defending champs,Manchester United had a bad day in the office and only managed a 0-0 draw and losing Wayne Rooney just before the half-time break.
Arsenal got on with life without Henry with a 2-1 win over London rivals Fulham, it was no stroll in the park though as Fulham went ahead as early as the 1st minute and had many chances to increase the lead, however Arsenal were playing at home and losing was not an option, especially on the very first day of the new season, for me the higlight in the game was Fabregas pass to Hleb for Arsenal’s second and winning goal.
Chelsea meanwhile would be bitterly dissapointed to have conceded 2 goals so early in the season but than again they were without captain John Terry.I always thought Glen Johnson was a decent rightback but if he continues playing like this he might cause a lot of damage to the Chelski campaign which explains why Jose wants Sevilla’s Daniel Alves.Chelsea finish the game 3-2 winner with debutants Pizarro and Malouda on the scoresheet while work horse Michael Essien scored the winning goal, but the bad news for Chelsea was that he has sustained a knee ligament injury.
Wayne Rooney also suffered an injury and did not feature in th second half for United against Reading, he was replaced by Nani.
The injury came in accidental circumstances when Duberry trod on the 27-million-pound striker’s foot.
It was clear Rooney had a problem, as he went down and removed his boot. Although he was able to continue briefly, he did not reappear for the second half, with Ferguson sending the 21-year-old for a scan.
Having already suffered two broken metatarsals in his career, the last against Chelsea in 2006 which nearly cost Rooney a place in the World Cup finals, it would be a big surprise if the former Everton man was not sidelined for a couple of months at least.
This will now push Carlos Tevez right into the fray, and it’s a good thing that United went through the hassle to bring in a striker as Louis Saha and Ole Gunnar are far away from being match fit.
