Reds manager Rafa Benitez ensured he will come in for more criticism when he brought off Steven Gerrard with 20 minutes to go.
The Spaniard was clearly looking to Tuesday’s Champions League visit to Marseille, but the withdrawal of his captain - and easily his best player on the night - amounted to conceding the game.
Benitez substituted his three most important players, with Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Jamie Carragher all failing to complete 90 minutes. It was a move that will test the patience of even his most ardent supporters.
