Cristiano Ronaldo’s first-half goal earned Manchester United an efficient 1-0 victory over Lyon at Old Trafford that secured their progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The 1999 champions dominated possession in the first half, but Lyon looked to have succeeded in frustrating them until Ronaldo broke the deadlock five minutes before the break.

The home side looked similarly in control for large periods of the second half, but almost conceded an equaliser with 15 minutes remaining when Keidar Keita cannoned a shot against the post.

But a late onslaught from the visitors failed to materialise, and United kept their shape to secure a 2-1 aggregate victory and a record-equalling 10th consecutive home win in the Champions League.
