After a dull and uninspiring Charity Shield match in which Manchester United and Portsmouth drew 0-0 after 90 minutes, the game was finally put out of its misery with a penalty shoot-out, with United winning 3-1.
Man United dominated parts of the game but were unable to break through, with Darren Fletcher guilty of missing their best chance before later hitting the crossbar when chipping from long range. Nani and Tevez both looked fresh whilst Gary Neville lasted around 70 minutes of the match before being replaced by Wes Brown. The Defoe and Crouch partnership didn’t really seem to display much potential, although it is still early days yet.
Manchester United claimed their first piece of the silverwear of the season when Tevez, Giggs and Carrick all converted their penalties whilst only Jermaine Defore could score for Portsmouth. Diarra, Mvuemba, and Glen Johnson all guilty of missing with some poor penalties, handing the Community Shield yet again to Manchester United.

Portsmouth have also announced that Tottenham defender Younes Kaboul will be confirmed as their latest signing on Monday. The 22 year old central defender will cost Portsmouth £5 million after spending just a year at Tottenham after joining from French side Auxerre. No doubt Kaboul will line up alongside either Distain or Campbell, with the latter looking a little sluggish in todays match at Wembley.
