Aston Villa have announced the signing of Spanish defender Carlos Cuellar from SPL side Rangers for a fee of £7.8 million. The defender is sure to bring some class to the squad, and will no doubt be a long-term replacement for Olof Mellberg who recently left Villa Park to join Juventus.
Cuellar is just the 2nd non-english signing out of 7 players brought in by O’Neil during the summer, which is an excellent and very-refreshing statistic. Aston Villa have been focusing on the signing some of the best young English talent available, and I feel that next season could be a very big one for the club, especially if they do manage to hang on to Gareth Barry.
The club have the likes of Nicky Shorey, Luke Young, Gareth Barry, Steve Sidwell, Nigel Reo Coker, Zat Knight, Wayne Routledge, Ashley Young and Gabriel Agbonlahor. All of which have been involved with some form of the English set up, be it at Under-21 level or full senior level. If the club were to bring in another top quality striker, and maybe a goalkeeper too, then the club would really be ready to push on to the next level.
