Martin O’Neil has been linked with another mediocre English footballer, this time Newcastle winger James Milner. Although Milner does show occasional bursts of promise, I don’t really feel he is a top class player. However, at a club like Villa it may be different. O’Neil has a knack of bringing the best out of players, and if they do manage to get Milner he will add even more pace to an already lightening-quick team. Milned had previously been at Villa on loan in 2005, and it would be a great permament signing for Villa, plus I don’t think Newcastle would be to fussed to see the back of him if they can get a good transfer fee in the process. Newcastle are apparently in all sorts of financial problems, so they may be tempted to cash in on their young English star. If he does leave, Newcastle will have to act quickly to bring in a replacement with the new season set to kick off in just 2 days.
Manchester United and Arsenal target David Silva has signed a new 5 year deal at Valencia, ending any of the speculation linking the classy Spanish winger with a move to the Premiership. Silva had an excellent Euro 2008, alerting many other clubs to the young star. However to be fair to Silva he did state that he didn’t want to move to an English club, and would much rather stay in Spain with Valencia. They will now be hoping that David Villa follows suit and ends the rumours surrounding his future.
Manchester City manager Mark Hughes has apparently made a £15 million move for his former Blackburn Rovers signing Roque Santa Cruz. Perhaps Hughes has been unconvinced by the strike options available at his new club, or maybe he is concerned with the latest injury Darius Vassel picked up. City have already spent big this season on another striker, when they brought in Brazilian Jo for in excess of £15 million. If the rumour is true then I doubt Santa Cruz will mind jumping ships, with Blackburn looking as if they will be in for a tough time when the season begins.
Roy Keane has apparently admitted defeat in his Johnny Evans hunt, with the Sunderland boss apparently making a £10 million bid for the Manchester United defender. United are looking to be introducing Evans to the first time squad this season after letting Gerrard Pique leave for Barcelona, so if Evans was to leave then United would probably have wanted to bring in some cover. £10 million was still a very big offer though, especially considering the lack of first-team activity the youngster has had.
