Gianfranco Zola has become the latest foreign manager to take the helm at a Premier League club. He took his first training session on Monday and has just recruited Steve Clarke to his coaching team. Managers such as Arsene Wenger and Steve Bruce have been the latest managers to comment on worries about lack of British Managers in the best league in the world.

Alan Curbishley left his post at Upton Park complaining of board interference. This is ironic as Curbs has the personality of an ironing board. Curbs is an undervalued manager but is about as predictable as a boxing match between Lennox Lewis and Ronnie Corbett.

Alan Curbishley, the ironing board

We can relate the decline in British managers with the rise in foreign ownership of Premier League teams. The Hammers, Liverpool and most recently Manchester City have all been taken over by overseas companies. Man City are one of the big clubs who still have a British manager in Mark Hughes. However, with the expectation of a Top 4 finish, will he last long? The blue side of Manchester have been taken over by a man with a tea towel on his head. The upside if this is that he can buy all the best players in the world, offer £150 million for Ronaldo and also dry the dishes after dinner.

But the foreign managers are great fun. José Mourinho could have auditioned for James Bond and Big Phil Scolari is like the granddad that has had too much to drink on Christmas Day.  We can’t lose our British mangers though. To do so would be to lose a big part of our game.
