After Saturday’s gritty won over the European Champions, Liverpool started the Champions League in great fashion last night with a 2-1 win in Marseille. Stevie Gerrard won the game for them with two goals of differing quality but great in importance.
The game started with both sides working hard and creating good chances. A great strength of this Anfield side is the way they harass people and close them down. The epitome of this is Dutchman Dirk Kuyt. The not so Flying Dutchman works effortlessly for the team but looks like the lovechild of Iain Dowie and Forrest Gump.
Marseille surprised the Reds by taking the lead. The ball over the top from Benoit Cheyrou was not cut out by Carragher. Maybe Jamie was still celebrating over Saturday’s win or thinking about stealing some hubcaps. With Reina hesitating, Marseille captain Lorik Cana calmly rolled the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the net.
That lead lasted just three minutes. Forrest Gump had the ball on the right touchline and rolled the ball back to Gerrard 25 yards out who scooped the ball into the top left hand corner of the net. Four minutes later, Gerrard scored a penalty after Babel was tripped in the box.
The second half was only notable for Babel hitting the post and Benoit Cheyrou being the man of the half. His brother, Bruno played for the Reds a few seasons ago. He was about as useful as Peter Beardsley at a beauty contest.
A valuable three points for the Reds. Their Anfield forms should take them comfortably through this group.
