We all thought the comedy European of past years had gone. We had been told that there are now no easy games.  Yesterday afternoon, Aston Villa had a game that was like playing the regulars from the Dog & Duck.

Villa actually went behind in the UEFA Cup first round tie against nine-man Litex Lovech. They went on to win 3-1 in Bulgaria. Litex took a surprise 10th minute lead when a free-kick from the left hand touch line was let go by everyone and nestled into the corner of the net. The new American goalkeeper, Brad Friedal, went against his county roots and kept his mouth shut, so all his defenders let the ball go into the goal.

In the final minute of the first-half the equaliser came. Every comedy team has a comedy goalkeeper. Everyone knows these. They normally have one leg, wear an eye-patch or have to wear a bib as they dribble a lot. A ball over the top should have been easily dealt with by the Litex defence but their goalkeeper Uros Golubovic rushed out, did a massive air kick and even Reo-Coker slotted home easily. The goalie’s movement from his line was so slow we went back in time. It was a mixture of Rick Waller and Stephen Hawking.

In the second half, Mihail Venkov was red-carded for handball and Gareth Barry, on his 400th Villa outing, scored from the spot. The handball was another piece of comedy for this game. It looked liked Venkov was playing beach volleyball at the Olympics but without the Brazilians bikini bottoms. The match ended well for Villa as underachiever Stiliyan Petrov’s late goal against a team from his home nation sealed the win.
