Star of ‘Happy Days’, The Fonz has a lovechild and his name is Gianfranco Zola. He got off to a winning start with West Ham beating manager less Newcastle 3-1. Two goals from debutant David Di Michele and a second-half goal from Matthew Etherington gave the Hammers the three points. Michael Owen scored a classy reply in the 67th minute but it was too little too late.
Zola cut a comedic figure on the touchline. He was always on the edge of his technical area and was a mixture of excitement, enthusiasm and an 8 year old kid. He looked so excited you half expected him to have a photo of him taken in his new West Ham tracksuit and put it on his Facebook as his profile picture. But Zola doesn’t completely understand the Hammers faithful just yet. When the chorus of West Ham fans sang his name and urged him to wave at them he was confused, “I must apologize to the fans because someone told me that they were asking me to give them a wave but I could not hear anything”.
West Ham played very well in the first half. There was confidence, flair and two goals from Michele. At half-time it was 2-0 and in the 53rd it went to 3-0. As good as the Hammers were, the troubled Geordies were poor. In particular the Argentinean centre-back, Coloccini. On the second goal he turned his back where all his team-mates were expecting a last-ditch block. He defended like a vegetarian would defend a pork chop.
On the 67th minute, Owen shimmied inside Neil and curled a classy goal into the bottom right corner of the net. This gave Newcastle a glimmer of hope which they didn’t deserve.
Two Italians won the day for West Ham, It’s a good start but more testing games will come and then we will see what Gianfranco Zola is made of.
