The Hammers could have to pay Sheffield United up to £30 million over the Carlos Tevez affair. Tevez played for West Ham in the 2006-07 season and if he had not been playing it, it would be highly doubtful they would have stayed up. Although the man is a cross of Gianfranco Zola and a goblin he scored vital goals including the winner in the 1-0 win at Old Trafford. The defining game of the season.
The independent tribunal in charge of the case made a statement yesterday: “We have no doubt that West Ham would have at least three fewer points without Carlos Tevez. He played outstandingly well in the two wins West Ham secured in the last two games.” This is hard to argue with as Tevez almost single-handedly kept the team up with a series of great displays. Although the fans didn’t want him to celebrate goals near them as four Hammers fans fainted due to his ugliness.
This could leave the Hammers in massive trouble financially if they have to pay the £30 million. Earlier in the season they sold George McCartney and also Anton Ferdinand to Sunderland. They got £8 million for the sale of Ferdinand and that is like getting £50 for a potato. Ex-manager Alan Curbishley left the club because he was not in charge of transfer activity and the sells are seemingly going to carry on. Although the chance of Kieran Dyer getting sold are about as high as Tim Henman getting into a fight.
The issue has still to be decided and West Ham have the right to appeal. Sheffield United chairman Kevin McCabe said, ““I can confirm that both clubs have been notified of the ruling. The arbitration panel has awarded in our favour. The matter is still legally in process so I do not wish to comment any further until we have completed that process.” West Ham started a new era at the weekend, but they still have payback to come from an old one.
