The youngest ever team to play for Arsenal routed poor old Sheffield United last night.  The Gunners must have had a note for leaving school early or missed their weekday youth club so they could thrash the Blades.  Fans said that many of the Arsenal players were wearing braces on their teeth and were moaning they had to go straight to bed when they got home.

The average age of the starting line-up was 19.  Four of them: Vela, Wilshere, Gavin Hoyte and Fran Merida were all making their first starts for the club.  While all seven players on the bench were under twenty years old.  Jack Wilshere, one of the debutants, was influential all game and at 16 years and 267 days is definitely one to watch for the future.  Gary Speed, 39, in midfield for the Blades must have wondered if he was playing in the Carling Cup or the Sunny Delight under 14’s plate.

Relative old-boy, Nicklas Bendtner, 20, scored two goals in the first half.  From then on it was the Carlos Vela show.  The fantastic Mexican, 19, netted a debut hat-trick at the Emirates.  The best of these was a brilliant lob over Grant Mitchell lookalike, Paddy Kenny.  In between these goals, Harry Potter a.k.a Wilshere fired the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the net in the 57th minute.  You had the feeling these youngsters could play all night. Like the Duracell bunny, but in school uniforms.
