In last night’s 2-1 defeat to Spurs, Newcastle had their lowest crowd since St. James Park re-opened over twenty years ago with a low attendance of 20, 577. The fans who stayed away must have been delighted they didn’t waste their night as they were spared another dreadful night in the North East.
It was déjà vu for the supporters as another home defeat meant Newcastle went out of the Carling Cup last night. With talk of Terry Venables coming into the club as an emergency manager, the team and the fans needed a good result and performance. They got neither.
The first half was terrible. Both sides looked desperately short of confidence and all that stood out was Nicky Butt passing away from his players at every opportunity. The second half was going the same way. A few minutes after the break, Pavlyuchenko missed marginally with a header for Spurs. This was soon forgotten as in the 62nd-minute, Tottenham took the lead when the unmarked Russian headed in. Four minutes later it was two as a Steven Taylor horror show let O’Hara in and he finished easily. The centre back partnership of Taylor and Coloccini has looked awful so far. They look like the football version of the Chuckle Brothers. In the last minute, Own scored from a rebound into the top corner. Owen played well all game and you felt like he didn’t deserver to be in such a poor team.
Newcastle United needs a change of some sort. Be it manager, board or luck. And they need it very soon indeed.
