Chelsea vs Blackburn : Live Carling Cup Football
Wednesday, 2nd December 2009
Kick Off : 20:00 GMT
Venue : Ewood Park, Blackburn

Blackburn Rovers host Premier League leaders Chelsea in tonights 2nd Carling Cup Quater-Final, with the winner getting a place in the Semi Finals, so are just a game away from an appearance at Wembley.

So far Manchester United and Aston Villa have both booked their place in the semi-finals, and Chelsea or Blackburn will make their way to the next stage of the competition, joining either Arsenal or Man City.

Chelsea will undoubtebly be favourites to win tonights match, with both sides operating at opposite ends of the league domesticaly, and they are one of the favourites to go on and win the competition.

Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce is still recovering from his health problems so their assistant will take charge of the team again following their loss at the weekend.

Blackburn may fancy their chances against Chelsea, who will probably be hoping to put out some more of their squad players, resting the usual 11 that start Premier League matches.

The Chelsea second string may still proove to be too strong for the Blackburn starting 11, with Zhirkov, Deco, Beletti, Kalou and Michael Ballack all expected to start. Exciting youngster Kakuta looks set to feature at some point in the game for Chelsea.

Franco Di Santo will be ineligible for this game as he is on loan from Chelsea to Blackburn, so Blackburn will start with Jason Roberts up front, and Blackburn will also be without the in-form, top-scorer David Dunn who has a calf strain.

Chelsea head into this game on the back of an impressive 4-0 win in the Champions League against Atletico Madrid, however their last league outing resulted in a 2-1 loss at Villa Park. Chelsea seem to be struggling away from home this season with 2 losses in their last 2 away league games, against Villa and then Wigan, but their home form has been impressive and they should beat Blackburn Rovers with no real trouble.

That said, Sam Allardyce has had a habit of stealing points from some of the top teams due to the physical presence that his teams usually carry, and so he will be hoping that from set plays his Blackburn side can inflict some damage on Chelsea, who’s manager Carlo Ancelotti has admitted recently that set-plays are currently causing their side a lot of problems.

Chelsea vs Blackburn

Blackburn head into this game on the back of a 3-2 win against Burnley which will surely boost their confidence but they will be in for a much more difficult game when they place Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

neither of these teams have anything left to play for in the Premiership, well not so true Blackburn could still get some more money by climbing up the table a bit more but Chelsea are stuck in 3rd no matter what happens. Blackburn fans will be happy to know their safety is secured for next season, although it never really looked like they would be relegated since big Sam to the helm.

So what’s left for these two teams? Chelsea still have the Fa cup final to look forward to and Guus Hiddink will want to keep his side sharp and in good form for the final two games. Blackburn though can start planning for next season, whether that is bringing in new faces or selling old ones, who knows? I guess we will find out soon.

My Prediction: 3-2
