AFC warns Malaysia to Focus on Asian Cup Not Man Utd

Malaysia has been given a stern warning by The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to focus more on it’s role as the host for the 2007 Asian Cup to be held in Kuala Lumpur from the 7th to the 29th of July 2007 rather than to focus on Manchester United Far East tour.

Assistant general secretary Clare Kenny said AFC officials had met with Malaysian tourism and sports ministries on Tuesday and received assurances that a tour by English Premier League United would not dilute the Asian equivalent of the European Championship.

AFC general secretary Peter Velappan had said United’s reported visit along with other events threaten to push the Asian Cup into the sidelines.

“I know the Malaysian football season starts early next year and am hoping that the FAM will do its part to promote the AFC Asian Cup 2007 in a big way,” Velappan told the AFC’s official Web site.

“To avoid a clash of interests, I would like the FAM to notify us about their 2007 activities. United’s Far East Tour and the G-14 Youth Championship are some conflicting activities scheduled for next year and we need to look into this.”

I don’t think it will affect Malaysia at all..Man Utd will only be a single game here and that should not be a big deal in my opinion, but in truth i do believe fans in Malaysia would rather watch a Premier League team rather than some Asians teams 😛
