So here we are again, another Euro 2012 match with this one pivotal in deciding the fate of the trophy – the second Semi-Final match, with Germany facing Italy. The winner of this match will of course be heading through to a final against Spain, who overcome a valiant Portugal side last night eventually winning on penalties.
Germany go into this match as favourites to win both this game and the overall trophy. Spain haven’t looked at their sharpest so far in the tournament, whereas Germany seem to have not yet been tested. Italy on the otherhand faced a tough Quarter Final with England which lasted the full 90 minutes and then injury time and penalties too. This is sure to take a toll on the Italian players, especially the ageing legs of star performer Andreas Pirlo. Germany have had longer to recouperate following their game with Greece, which was finished in the 90 minutes.
Germany manager Joachim Loew actually managed to rest several star players against Greece in the Quarter Finals, a shrewd move which eventually paid off, so the likes of Podolski, Gomes and Muller will probably all be recalled and will be raring to go. Schweinsteiger has looked to have shaken off a niggling ankle complaint and will start. Meanwhile Italy have injury doubts with Chiellinie, De Rossi and Abate all doubts for this game.
I’m expecting Italy to try and sit back a little to contain Germany, much like they did with Spain, I don’t feel they can match Germany player for player and so may have to adapt their tactics which were used effectively to the demise of England. Footy Blog’s prediction – Germany 2 – 1 Italy.
