The Spanish international plays as a midfielder and is capable of playing in a variety of positions. Arsenal had been linked with the star for quite some time but the deal always looked at being held up, perhaps by the financial problems that Malaga is currently encountering.
Malaga have meanwhile gone from being one of the richest clubs in La Liga to being one which is at risk of being severally punished, with the rich owner Sheikh Al Thani seemingly pulling his finances out of the club. They have big debts to pay, and were recently threatened with being made insolvent. Selling the likes of Santi Cazorla seems to be the only way the club can balance the books and to help the club survive. Great news for clubs like Arsenal, who rarely venture into the transfer market.
The addition of Cazorla to the squad comes along with other pre-season signings Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud, more attacking options likely to dilute the effect of Robin Van Persie leaving – if a deal is ever agreed with another party.
