Great news for the Londoners today as two of their most experienced players committed their future to the club. Both endured questionable starts to their Arsenal careers but have been integral in the clubs resurgence this season.
German centre-back Mertesacker came under fire throughout his debut season at the club for sporadic form and a distinct lack of pace that was often exploited when facing particularly quick opponents. However in recent seasons he has been a mainstay is the Gunners first eleven and his partnership with Laurent Koscielny, another player who initially struggled to impress, has led to one of the best defensive records in the league so far this season.
Rosicky has featured less often but has proved his worth on numerous occasions this season and it is no secret that manager Arsene Wenger is a big fan of the 33 year old midfielder, once touted to be one of the best footballers Europe had produced before a spell of injuries seemed to have permanently hindered his career. It must be said though, that this past season he has arguably played some of the best football of his career, his managers and team mates alike often recognising his fantastic technical ability and determination on the pitch.
Wenger has described the duo as “players of exceptional quality and experience” and securing their services for at least the near future can only be seen as a huge positive for the club, undoubtedly on the up. He continued in a message to the clubs website;
“They have consistently proven themselves at the highest level.”
“There is a great feeling of togetherness and belief in the group and this news will only help to strengthen this further.”
