David Moyes picked up 3 points in his first home game as Manchester United manager as his Red Devils produced a rather subpar performance, but nonetheless topped Crystal Palace by a score line of 2-0. It was the visiting Eagles who were the better side in the opening 45, not doing too many things in the attacking half but defending very well and limiting United’s shots at the other end. Keeper Julian Speroni only had to make a few decent saves as it appeared that Palace would take a respectable 0-0 draw into the break. That was precisely when things began to go South for the birds, with RVP smashing a volley off the crossbar before eventually scoring from a penalty kick mere minutes later, after Ashley Young was supposedly tripped from behind when entering the box on a 1 v. 1. The infraction was enough for match official John Moss to show Palace midfielder Kagisho Dikgacoi a straight red card and leave Palace down both a man and goal for the second half. The second 45 went along rather similarly to the first, with United dominating possession but unable to break the Palace resistance until late on when a Wayne Rooney free kick curled over the wall and past Speroni to seal the victory for Moyes and co. Palace boss Ian Holloway (who was serving the 1st of a 2 game touchline suspension for criticism of officials) will be pleased with his teams effort and Moyes will be a bit disappointed in the Red Devils’ performance, but points are what counts and United took all 3 of them on the day.
