Venue : Stamford Bridge, Chelsea
Liverpool make the trip to Stamford Bridge to face a Chelsea side that will be looking to return to winning ways in the league after suffering an embarrasing 3-1 defeat to Wigan last weekend, their first loss of the season.
Chelsea played and won in midweek, a very fortunate 1-0 win in Cyprus against Apoel Nicosia, but Carlo Ancelotti will need a much better performance from his men if they are to overcome a Liverpool side that are in very good Premier League form.
Liverpool also had a disappointing performance in Europe, losing 2-0 to Fiorentina in Italy. However, the club has won 3 of their last 3 Premier League games, scoring an incredible 14 goals in the process – 6-1 against Hull City, 3-2 against West Ham and 4-0 against Burnley. Rafael Benitez and his players would be lucky to score so many at Stamford Bridge, and will probably go into the game hoping to pick up at least 1 point.
Currently Chelsea sit 2nd in the league, behind Manchester United on just goal difference, and Liverpool are 3 points behind. It would be disastrous if Chelsea were to lose two games on the bounce, inviting Liverpool right in to challenge to win the Premier League for the first time in their history.
An added edge to this match comes from the fact that the new Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has twice faced Rafael Benitez’s Liverpool side in the Champions League final with Italian side AC Milan. In the first, a memorable Liverpool win on penalties in Istanbul, and the second a disappointing return match in Athens.
Chelsea will be without the suspended Petr Cech who received a red card for his challenge whilst conceeding the penalty against Wigan, a very unlucky decision as he didn’t appear to be the last-man. Goalkeeper Henrique Hilario will play instead.
John Obi Mikel is also out of the game for Chelsea, and they could also be without striker Daniel Sturridge, midfielder Michael Ballack and defender Alex. Joe Cole and Didier Drogba should both be fit and ready to start against Liverpool, two players who have excellent records when playing against Liverpool.
Liverpool’s Argentine midfielder Jaview Mascherano may be ready for Sundays match against Chelsea after missing out against Fiorentina with a hamstring problem. Daniel Agger is close to returning for Liverpool too, and could be set for a place on the bench.
Chelsea vs Liverpool is always a highly entertaining encounter, the two clubs have faced each other on so many occasions in recent seasons (mostly in the Champions League surprisingly), and when these 2 teams do meet it is rarely a dull affair.
My Prediction: 2-1
