Sunday, 29th November 2009
Kick Off : 13:30 GMT
Venue : Goodison Park, Everton
Everton, a side that currently sits in the 14th place of the table in the Premier League, will host their traditional rivals Liverpool in the 212th edition of the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Sunday 29th November, 1:30 PM. Everton boss Davis Moyes will have midfielders Marouane Fellaini and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov available after returning from suspension, plus the Toffees’ morale will be boosted by the news that Steven Pienaar is ready to return after a two-month forced rest period, out of their line-up with a knee injury. But Everton will be still without long-term injured players Phillip Neville (PCL tear). Mikel Arteta and Phil Jagielka both have knee injuries and aren’t expected to return to the squad at least for another month. Some Everton players feel that their side will have the edge over their battered Anfield counterparts, especially after their victory from last season’s FA Cup 5th at Goodison.
Everton’s prolific striker Louis Saha, who has scored 8 goals in the EPL so far this season, will be the subject of a late fitness test after his knee injury in the defeat to Hull City.
For Liverpool, the good news is that striker Fernando Torres is expected to play the match after recovering from an abdominal strain.
Rafa Benitez’s will be focused in using right-back Glen Johnson, centre-back Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Argentine defender Emiliano Insua, attacking midfielder Alberto Aquilani and striker David N’Gog, all these players now available to start in their first Merseyside derby. Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard is also back to full fitness, right in time for the match. But Liverpool boss will not able to use Dutch winger Ryan Babel, who is still out with an ankle injury. Liverpool was condemned to play in the Europa League during midweek; some fans are saying that Liverpool’s season reached a new low. For this reason, it is absolutely imperative for Liverpool to overcome their bitter rivals Everton on Sunday’s game. The team’s energy will be used in trying to achieve the goal of climbing back into the EPL’s top four. Benitez received the club ownership’s backing on Tuesday, but another failure will surely raise more question marks over the Spaniard’s future and the direction of the side. This Sunday’s match up is a tale of two shaky sides at best. Between the two of them, both teams have only managed two wins in their last 13 league matches combined.
My Prediction: 2-1
