Saturday, 21st November 2009
Kick Off : 12:45 GMT
Venue : Anfield, Liverpool
Liverpool’s ability to avoid a total collapse in this campaign will be tested again when Manchester City pays visit to Anfield on Saturday, at 12:45 PM. The outcome of this weekend’s Premier League match will provide a significant measure of Rafa Benitez’s side’s prospects of lifting themselves up and going back into the top four spots, also keeping in mind the potentially devastating consequences of missing out on next season’s Champions League. The good news is the return of Steven Gerrard to the starting line-up, with the club captain having rested from play over the two-week international break.
Glen Johnson and Daniel Agger also come back, but striker Fernando Torres will be out with a calf injury. However Benitez appears hesitant to test Alberto Aquilani’s 20-million-pound quality.
City’ slipped out of the table’s top four after drawing their last five matches. They hope that Robinho will show his flair at Anfield.
The Brazilian player is close to fit after his two months out because of an ankle injury. Man City have failed to defeat the opposing teams in recent weeks, not recording a single win in 5 successive games. The English Premier League’s record for consecutive draws sits at seven and City may not want to close in the record at Anfield. In the last 6 visits to Liverpool, with five defeats included, City only picked a point in a 1-1 draw dating back to February of 2009. The City side has also not won there since 2003 and this remains as their only triumph on the red side of Merseyside in the last 28 years of league competition. But despite Liverpool’s statistical superiority in recent clashes, the last eight matches between these two at Anfield have been very close. The record shows one draw, six wins for Liverpool and only one for City but all those Liverpool’s victories were determined by a minimal one-goal margin. Over the weekend, more of the same is to be expected.
Mark Hughes’ revamped team lost only once in the league this season but it would not be surprising to see this number go up to two as they face a Liverpool side than in the upcoming weeks will be determined to show their big four credentials to their top four English rivals. Both teams are looking vulnerable in defence but with the support of an Anfield at full capacity behind them, the Reds could pick up a home win that they desperately need.
My Prediction: 2-2
