Saturday, 12th December 2009
Kick Off : 17:30 GMT
Venue : Old Trafford, Manchester
The weekend’s match will feature Manchester United and Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Saturday 12th December, at 5:30 PM. Manchester United Red Devils will be hoping that they can follow up their fantastic Champions League victory playing away against Wolfsburg in Germany, with another success against their Aston Villa rivals at Old Trafford. Sir Alex Ferguson’s bruised side valiant effort allowed them to clinch the top spot in their group after they had previously clinched their passage into the knockout stages of the competition.
Veteran Michael Owen’s hat-trick performance will surely boost his confidence and it will be interesting to see how the legendary attacker plays in the coming weeks as he seeks to impress England’s boss Fabio Capello looking ahead to next summer’s World Cup finals. What was more remarkable about midweek’s win was the fact that the Red Devils were playing without a number of their first-team defenders. Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, John O’Shea, Wes Brown, Jonny Evans, Fabio and Gary Neville did not play the match because of their injuries or illness. Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher were the heart of the defence, with the side presenting a very different look.
Attackers Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney also could not play the game but they could be fit again for the clash with Martin O’Neill’s side.
Aston Villa sits fifth in the table and are just one point behind the surprising Tottenham Hotspur in the fourth and final Champions League qualification spot.
While United will be forced to field yet another depleted defence this weekend, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Ashley Young, John Carew and James Milner will try to show that they are capable of pounding the Red Devils and grab a positive result for the Midlands side. With just one defeat in their last 11 fixtures, they should be confident regardless of Man U’s team selection. O’Neill’s side will still be without long-term injured players Wilfred Bouma (ankle) and Curtis Davies (dislocated shoulder). During last season, United claimed a late 3-2 win against the rather unlucky Villains at Old Trafford. This time around a win for the hosts would put more pressure on Chelsea at the top of the table, now only two points in front of the reigning EPL champions. In the process they have gone nine games without losing in the league competition since they were last beaten and they will try to continue their traditional dominance of Aston Villa.
My Prediction: 3-1
