After Man United’s shock 3-1 defeat by Everton at Goodison Park at the weekend Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will have his team really fired up for the visit of a relatively in-form West Ham side, probably sensing that the champions could be going through a tough patch as they aim to bridge the gap between the league leaders Chelsea at Old Trafford this evening.

West Ham play Man United having beaten Hull convincingly in a 3-0 win at Upton park at the weekend and having won against a previously in-form Birmingham side. Manchester United were previously unbeaten in their last 5 games until the trip to Everton where they were well beaten by a good Everton side. Man United were poor in this game and they will know that they can’t afford to drop anymore points as Chelsea won in their game with Wolves.

Rio Ferdinand looks set to return to the Man United side to face his old team West Ham.

West Ham will still have fond memories of the Old Trafford stadium having managed to avoid relegation with a 1-0 win thanks to a Carlos Tevez goal in the 07 season, and they will be hoping for a similar result in tonights game when they play Man United.

Rio Ferdinand hasn’t partnered Nemandja Vidic in defence since October but this pairing could be re-united tonight for the visit of West Ham.

Kieron Dyer could be set to feature following a lengthy absense through injury but it is unlikely that he will last for the full 90 minutes. Latest Hammers signing Benni McCarthy is unlikely to be fit for this game as is the defender Danny Gabbidon, Herita Ilunga, Luis Boa Morte, Calum Davenport and Zavon Hines.

Paul Scholes is likely to return to the center of the midfield for United whilst Ryan Giggs and Nani are both unavailable. Some have called for Rooney to be rested ahead of the Carling Cup final with Aston Villa although a move like this is unlikely to please Wayne after an off performance against his old club Everton.
