Kick Off : 15:00 GMT
Venue : Old Trafford, Manchester
The English Premier League game between Manchester United and Burnley will take place at Old Trafford on Saturday 16th January at 3:00 PM. Manchester United surely knows that they squandered the chance to move to the top of the EPL’s table for the first time since last October. This time they will be without Darren Fletcher after the Scot was shown the red card in the Red D evils’ Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Birmingham.
The Red Devils saw their match with Birmingham survive the weather last weekend, indeed it was one of only two games played in the English Premier League, but the final 1-1 draw that ensued pleased title rivals Chelsea more than it did Man U’s manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Despite their inconsistent performance so far this season, it must be said that Manchester United have exactly the same number points as they had at this point last season.
Man U reports that Ben Foster (back), Nemanja Vidic (calf) and Nani could play in the match, but the best news is the probable return of veteran goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.
The Clarets report that Defender-captain Steven Caldwell could miss the game with a groin strain, but striker Martin Paterson out since September, could be on the bench.
The Burnley side now have gone nine games without a win in the English Premier League, but on the positive side Stephen Jordan is now available after suspension and Clarke Carlisle could return to the squad after missing three matches with a groin strain. Burnley shocked United with an impossible 1-0 win in August playing at Turf Moor, thanks to Robbie Blake’s early goal but the Clarets have not won at Old Trafford since the 1962 season. They have visited Manchester United 10 times in League competition since then, losing six games and drawing four.
The Clarets surprised many observers with their appointment of Brian Laws as the side’s boss. He had only recently been sacked by a struggling Championship side Sheffield Wednesday, but the critics will surely make the former Burnley defender more determined to continue the good foundational work started by Owen Coyle. Laws must try to overcome Burnley’s alarming away play this season if the Clarets are to get anywhere near a new and shocking victory, emulating their success over the Red Devils at Turf Moor in that second game of the season in last August.
My Prediction: 4-1
