The late evening fixture of the weekend saw Aston Villa fall to Liverpool by a 1-0 score at Villa Park with Daniel Sturridge netting his and Liverpool’s second goal of the year. The Reds came out with a vengeance and bossed Villa around for the opening 35 minutes, their dominance reaching a peak in the 21st when Sturridge took a Jose Enrique pass and did wonders with it, dribbling past 3 members of the Villa defense and keeper Brad Guzan before finally potting the ball in the roof of the net to open (and eventually close) the scoring. The Villains finally came to life in the latter stages of the first half with Cristian Benteke and Ashley Westwood both creating chances. The second half came to be dominated by Villa when it came to possession and shots, but not goals as they simply could not break down the Liverpool back 4 and specifically keeper Simon Mignolet, who denied their best chance when he turned aside Benteke’s fierce volley from close range (to the great dismay of many fantasy owners like myself). Villa couldn’t muster anything of true substance in the final moments as Liverpool won their 2nd straight against a tired Villa side who were playing their 3rd game in 7 days.
