In by far the worst match of the weekend so far, Newcastle and West Ham played out a real barn-burner at St. James’ Park that resulted in a combined 1 shot on goal. That’s right, 2 Premier League clubs with world class players on either side (Cisse, Carroll, Nolan, Ben Arfa, Noble, Sissoko, Ameobi, Cole, etc.) combined for 1, freaking shot on target, out of 22 total shots no less. Granted, the match was played in slippery and wet conditions as a rainstorm took in the match along with 49,622 spectators at St. James’. Regardless, you would think that 2 football teams just about anywhere could produce better than the 4.5% shooting performance that these two sides combined for on the day. For those curious, the lone shot on goal came from West Ham as Stewart Downing got his effort on the frame of goal just after the second half began, only for it to be comfortably saved by Tim Krul. West Ham keeper Jussi Jääskeläinen had probably the easiest day of his career in goal as he could have literally sat there and eaten a pie during the match as Newcastle failed to put any of their 16 shots on target, showing just how badly they miss Yohan Cabaye as his transfer saga continues to unfold. The reader may be shocked to know that this match finished a 0-0 draw as Newcastle yet again dropped points at home while West Ham should be happy enough with a draw away from Upton Park.
