Stoke surged into the top half of the Barclays Premier League table on Saturday afternoon after knocking off West Ham by a goal to ‘nil at Upton Park to give the Potters 6 points in 3 games. The Hammers were by far the worse of the 2 sides with the home side failing to record a shot on goal the entire match and also trailing in possession to the Staffordshire club. Like most of the other 3:00pm kick-off games, the 1st half was a slow one with limited action in front of goal as Stoke only managed 4 shots on target, but each one was gobbled up with relative ease by Jussi Jaaskelainen in the West Ham goal. The second half continued to be all Stoke with the Potters finding more shots and attempts on goal with Kenwyne Jones in a striker role instead of Peter Crouch, who sat due to Mark Hughes’ decision. It was Jermaine Pennant though who notched the only goal in the match with the Stoke midfielder elevating his free kick over the wall before it dipped sharply down in front of a hapless Jaaskelainen in goal to give Stoke the 1-0 home win and big Sam Allardyce food for thought as we go into the break.
