A passionate and tense North London Derby fell the way of Arsenal as they nipped Spurs by a goal to ‘nil with Olivier Giroud the lone goal scorer. The noise was immaculate at the Emirates Stadium throughout the match with both sets of fans in full voice from 30 minutes before the kickoff. It was Tottenham who got off to the better start in the match though, with Roberto Soldado and Andros Townsend both having shots blocked away by a determined Gunner defense early on. That soon opened the door for Giroud to strike with the Frenchman putting Arsenal ahead on 24 minutes with a cheeky little dink past a frozen Hugo Lloris in goal for Spurs. Theo Walcott set up Giroud exquisitely for the goal though, with a perfectly weighed ball to the near post that allowed him the time to execute the goal. AVB’s Spurs side couldn’t mount much in response to it in the first half, but they went all out in the second 45 to try and at least get a point from the match, with Chadli, Defoe, Walker, and record signing Erik Lamela of Roma (who came on for Townsend in the 75th) all getting opportunities at Szczesny in goal. All of those chances went begging though and a final mad scramble cleared away by Arsenal in the dying seconds did the job with Arsene Wenger’s men capturing the all important Derby Day win at home.
