The people at book publishers Pan Macmillan were recently kind enough to send us out a copy of the latest book by French football journalist and author Philippe Auclair; a book titled Cantona The Rebel Who Would Be King.

The book provides an extremely thorough account of Eric Cantona’s footballing career, from his life in France to his move to Leeds United in England in 1992, followed by his final and most memorable period of his career at Manchester United from 1992 until 1997.

The author of the book Philippe Auclair has obviously spent a massive amount of time leafing through various accounts of Eric Cantona’s career from many different sources, and he has done an incredible job throughout the book in dispelling many of the Cantona myths, as well as going on to explain many incidents that were never previously made aware by either the media or Eric Cantona at the time of action.

cantona the rebel who would be king

Cantona, The Rebel Who Would Be King contains 465 pages of genuine, interesting information based on Eric Cantona’s memorable story, and any fan of Cantona should definitely take some time out to have a read of the book. Philippe Auclair confessed in the book that he himself is an Arsenal fan, and yet the way in which he enfuses about Eric you would be none the wiser about his own footballing taste, perhaps only when Dennis Bergkamp is described as being on a par with Cantona (or perhaps even above it) ;) .

To begin with the book is a little hard going, but this is probably because a fair few pages were dedicated to Cantona’s muddled time in French football, and this isn’t really a criticism of the book or of the author, but perhaps simply that the amount of times Eric swapped and changed clubs in those early days made for somewhat staggered reading. Once you have understood the depth in which this book studies the life of Cantona, you will really enjoy every last page, and will be delighted with the whole story, which should hopefully bring up many amazing memories of Eric’s recent time in English football.

Overall, we really recommend that you buy this book if you are at all interested in Eric Cantona. There are some really incredible accounts of Eric from all sorts of brilliant sources, none greater than that of Sir Alex Ferguson, who’s comments are printed throughout the book, in many occasions for the first time ever. This is a real revelation for fans of Cantona, and we really recommend that you read The Rebel Who Would Be King sometime soon.
