Another highly entertaining pre-match interview with Ipswich manager Roy Keane, who was asked about the whole Thierry Henry handball incident on Friday. Keane is obviously still bitter towards the FAI, and he refused to condemn Henry’s actions – instead putting all the blame on the Irish defenders who let the ball bounce in their box, and blamed Shay Given too. He went on to say that Ireland should have taken their chances in the match, and should have gone that extra step to secure their World Cup position, but were mentally afraid to take the next step.
Ipswich played Sheffield Wednesday at home on Saturday and drew 0-0 with yet another poor performance from Keane’s men, with his own defenders letting the ball bounce in the box on at least 1 occasion, something which surely would have infuriated the manager especially after his criticisms of the Republic of Ireland team. Personally I believe Keane was right in some points in his interview, but failing to criticise Thierry Henry’s actions is surely going to anger many football fans across the world. Not that Keane will care…
