Kick Off : 19:45 GMT
Venue : The Emirates, Arsenal
Arsenal will attempt to secure a ticket to the Champions League knockout stages in their 24th November match against Standard Liege in Emirates Stadium at 7:45 PM. In their last match in this competition, the North Londoners defeated AZ Alkmaar to solidify their position as leaders of their group. Cesc Fàbregas scored twice in the 4-1 win with Samir Nasri and Abou Diaby also scoring for the Gunners. The same night Standard won at home against the Greek side Olympiacos, victory that gave them four points.
Arsenal was undefeated in seven EPL games prior to their visit to Sunderland, taking 19 points out of 21, after a 4-2 reverse at Manchester City last September 12.
Top scorer Robin van Persie was missed in that match and the Gunners will not have him for a while, after he suffered an ankle injury playing for Holland.
Arsenal will not count with Abou Diaby ruled out because of a calf problem and with Nicklas Bendtner, still suffering from a groin strain. But the fast attacking duo of Theo Walcott and Carlos Vela could be seeing playing time after recovering from knee injuries.
Probably Arsene Wenger will play with Eduardo in the centre of the attack, in what has become his typical 4-3-3 formation this season.
Standard Liege also was defeated in their Jupiter League game against KAA Gent last Saturday.
Liege will be missing Steven Defour who is nursing a foot injury and Igor De Camargo with a broken toe. The Belgian side will hope that Milan Jovanovic continues with his goal scoring run. The Serbian-born striker has scored 11 goals in all competitions this season, 2 of them coming in Champions League play. Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez and Axel Witsel will have the responsibility of controlling an Arsenal midfield loaded with talent, while at the same time trying to support Jovanovic’s dangerous counterattacks. The first match between these two sides was a rather exciting affair with the Gunners winning 3-2 after having falling 2-0 behind very early on in the game. A pair of goals by Eliaquim Mangala and Jovanovic had given Liege a comfortable lead before Bendtner, Vermaelen and Eduardo secured the comeback away victory for Arsenal. Although a draw on Tuesday is all that Arsenal needs to qualify to the next round, Arsene Wenger’s philosophy will guarantee that his team plays to win the match, keeping in mind the superior quality of Wenger’s boys.
My Prediction: 3-0
