The current Champions League title holders will be facing Inter Milan on Tuesday November 24th at 7:45 PM, going through a bit of a crisis. After a fantastic beginning of the season that saw Barcelona obtaining the UEFA Super Cup and six consecutive victories in the first six La Liga matches of the season, they have now hit something of a bump on the road. A draw in the first Inter – Barcelona match was unsurprising enough, but an unexpected loss at Camp Nou to Rubin Kazan was something not in the plans of the Catalan club.
Barcelona bounced back, drawing its rematch against Rubin Kazan in the Champions League, but could only register a draw against Osasuna and another one to Athletic Bilbao this past Saturday. Samuel Eto’o returns to Barcelona for the first time since he was traded to Inter Milan in exchange for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, while Thierry Henry looks to put behind him all the mounting controversies surrounding his hand-assisted pass in France’s infamous qualification match against Ireland.
Lionel Messi suffered a thigh injury playing against Athletic Bilbao and his presence remains questionable for Tuesday’s match.
Barcelona are now in second place in La Liga, behind their traditional rivals Real Madrid and their Champions League classification to the next round is somewhat in doubt.
Whilst the present is obscure for Barcelona, the state of affairs in the Inter Milan must necessarily be considered bright.
The current Italian Serie A champions defeated Bologna on Saturday by a score of 3-1 to widen their lead at the top of the table. They are now five points over second place Juventus. Although Mourinho’s side drew its away match against Rubin Kazan, as well as two home games facing Dynamo Kiev and Barcelona, Inter Milan find themselves on first place on their group with six points, after beating Dynamo Kiev in Ukraine. But even if leading Group F, Inter will not be complacent in Spain. Inter boss Jose Mourinho will use striker Samuel Eto’o in the starting lineup, despite being used only as a substitute in last Saturday’s 3-1 win against Bologna. It will be interesting to witness how Eto’o is received by the Barcelona fans in his first match at Camp Nou since being shipped off to Italy. In other news, the expected return of the Dutch international Wesley Sneijder who did not play in Saturday’s match, will give Inter a boost in the attack.
