Tuesday, 3rd November 2009
Kick Off : 19:45 GMT
Venue : Old Trafford, Manchester
Man United have the chance to practically wrap up their Champions League qualification tonight when they play CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford, Manchester. Manchester United played CSKA Moscow just a fortnight ago in the Champions League, this time in Russia, and they won 1-0 late on through an Antonio Valencia strike. This was the first time Man United had won on Russian soil, and this time around it will be CSKA’s turn to try and win on English soil for the first time as they face a tricky game against United.
Man United come into this match in pretty good form, their last game resulted in a 2-0 win against Blackburn Rovers in the league. CSKA’s last game was against Man United in the Champions League, with the Russian league currently closed, meaning that Manchester United should be the fresher, more match-fit team of the two. CSKA however have some very talented players, and it will still proove to be a difficult match for the English champions.
For this match Wayne Rooney is doubtful after his wife Coleen recently gave birth to a boy, so for personal reasons Rooney may not be able to play in this game. Dimitar Berbatov is struggling with an ankle injury after his great performance against Blackburn at the weekend. This means that Michael Owen could start up front for Man United, after only featuring against CSKA as a sub a fortnight ago. United’s centreback pairing of Vidic and Ferdinand is still missing as they are both out injured, which means that Ferguson is likely to start with Wes Brown and Johnny Evans again. Ryan Giggs and Ji Sung Park are both out with injuries, but Darren Fletcher could return to the side for the visit of CSKA Moscow.
CSKA Moscow have their own problems to worry about for this match, with head coach Juande Ramos already being sacked. Leonid Slutski is now the head coach of CSKA, and he will be hoping to improve on the 1-0 loss last time they played Man United. CSKA have just 3 points so far in the competition, a stat they will be drastically hoping to improve on tonight in Manchester. They will be without winger Mark Gonzalez again however, as he has been ruled out for the season through injury. Sekou Oliseh will also not play due to a hip injury.
My Prediction: 3-1

English champions Manchester United head to Russia to play CSKA Moscow at the much-debated Luzhniki Stadium. CSKA Moscow’s stadium is much talked about because of its plastic pitch, and on many occasions players and managers have complained at the prospect of having to play on it. However, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has stated that the pitch should provide no problems for his players ahead of tonights early kick off, and last time Man United played here it was against Chelsea in the Champions League final, which they won on penalties.
Tonights match between CSKA Moscow and Manchester United is due to kick off at 5.30PM so make sure you are aware of this – usually Champions League matches don’t kick off until around 7.45PM.
Man United find themselves in first place in Group B of the Champions League competition, with 6 points from 2 matches, with Wolfsburg behind on 3 points followed by CSKA Moscow also on 3 points, and then Besiktas on 0 points. Manchester United will feel that they can get themselves within touching distance of qualification if they win tonight, but they will have to perform to their highest ability if they are – many of their first time stars are out with injuries, and it is likely that Ferguson would prefer to rest them and keep them in prime position for the derby match against Liverpool at the weekend.
Manchester United haven’t quite been firing on all cylinders recently, and have been winning matches and picking up points with gritted teeth – they won 2-1 against Bolton at the weekend but had to hold on towards the end of the game as Bolton threatened to snatch a point, just like Sunderland did in United’s previous league game, again at Old Trafford. Apart from this minor setback, Man United have won 5 and drawn 1 of their last 6 matches in all competitions, and their last outing in the Champions League resulted in a 2-1 home win against Wolfsburg.
CSKA Moscow haven’t been on top form either recently, winning 3, drawing 1 and losing 2 of their previous 6 matches. 2 of these matches were against English competition – drawing 1-1 against Aston Villa at home and then beating them 2-0 at home in Russia. Villa are no pushovers, so Man United will be under no illusions of how difficult the trip to Moscow could turn out to be.
Man United will be without star players Wayne Rooney, Darren Fletcher, Park Ji Sung, Ryan Giggs, and Patrice Evra, arguably 4 or 5 of their best players so far this season. All of these players are currently injured, but manager Ferguson believes that they will be fit for the Liverpool game at the weekend. United may also be without Berbatov and Vidic who are both still carrying knocks.
CSKA Moscow have been under the guidance of Juande Ramos since last month, and the ex-Tottenham Hotspur manager will be hoping to get one over on Manchester United in tonights match. They are likely to be without Mark Gonzalez, the former Liverpool winger, as well as striker Guilherme. Vasili Berezutski is also a doubt for this important match.
Although Man United have a very depleated squad for the trip to Russia I should expect them to still have enough experience in the side to pick up at least a point from this match, in what will definitely be a very hostile and intimidating atmosphere.
