Rafa Benitez’s side could end up playing in the Europa League, but the Liverpool manager is determined to make the most of his team’s chances against Debrecen in Budapest, at 7:45 PM on Tuesday. Problem is that Liverpool’s fate will be decided by other results. If Liverpool beats Debrecen but Fiorentina defeats Lyon, Liverpool are out. The scenario is different with Liverpool beating Debrecen and Fiorentina drawing with Lyon, then Liverpool would need to beat Fiorentina by a difference of three goals in their final game, in order to go through. Benitez has other concerns too. Fernando Torres definitely will be sitting this game out; David Ngog will be the man expected to replace the Spaniard striker. Steven Gerrard will play behind Ngog forming Liverpool’s attacking tandem. Yossi Benayoun advancing from the left flank offers alternatives in the offensive side of the Reds.
Liverpool’s defence is likely to be strengthened with the return of Glen Johnson at the right-back position, with Jamie Carragher lining up in a more familiar centre-half spot. Benitez could also give Alberto Aquilani his first start in the midfield, instead of Javier Mascherano or Lucas.
The record shows that on the first match between these two sides, Liverpool defeated Debrecen at Anfield by a narrow 1-0 margin.
A victory is also what Debrecen needs, as they battle to finish 3rd in the group and qualify to the UEFA Europa League.
The Hungarian side’s two strikers Adamo Coulibaly and Gergely Rudolf will have to be very sharp if they want to break down Liverpool’s defence. The pair of strikers have contributed with 4 of the 5 goals that the Hungarian reigning champions have scored in their group of the Champions League. Debrecen manager András Herczeg finally has a fully fit squad to select his starting eleven from, a luxury which Liverpool hasn’t had this season. Debrecen will likelp play high in confidence after obtaining their second Hungarian League victory in four days thanks to Gergely Rudolf’s winning goal scored in injury-time against Budapest Honved last Friday. But to face an English Premier League team of the quality, at least on paper, of Liverpool will be an entirely different matter. Probably the Hungarian fans will create a hostile environment at the Ferenc Puskas stadium located in Budapest, but the game will likely show Liverpool dominating the time of possession of the ball, with Debrecen looking to score quickly using the speed of its strikers.
My Prediction: 1-1
