Kick Off : 15:00 BST
Venue : Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Port Elizabeth – South Africa

The World Cup round of 16 game between Uruguay and South Korea will take place at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday 26th June 2010, kick-off set for 3:00 PM. Uruguay and South Korea have met at the World Cup only once before. The year was 1990 and the two nations clashed in a final group encounter. Uruguay were the victors, advancing to the second round thanks to a stoppage time goal by Daniel Fonseca. Uruguay’s manager that day was Oscar Tabarez, who will again be in the South Americans’ bench and he is desperate to see Uruguay make their mark after decades of mediocrity in the tournament.

The two-time world champions have not reached the last eight since 1970, when they were semi-finalists. Uruguay’s performances in South Africa have been characterised by defensive organization, in fact they have yet to concede a goal. Upfront Diego Forlan is maintaining the form that led Atletico Madrid to Europa League glory in May. Uruguay are on the verge of recording their name in the football history books once again
Uruguay’s Coach Oscar Tabarez may be tempted to bring in defender Diego Godin in place of Mauricio Victorino, who is just one booking away from suspension.

South Korea coach Huh Jung-moo could drop fullback Cha Du-ri, who was at fault for Nigeria’s opening goal in their 2-2 draw, with Kim Dong-jin favourite to replace him.

Uruguay Vs South Korea

The success so far of South Korea in the tournament has been built on their team work ethic but they do possess one outstanding and creative individual in Manchester United’s Park Ji-Sung. He managed to score in the convincing win against Greece and it will be the difficult job of Uruguay’s experienced midfield enforcer Diego Perez to restrict Park’s possession if possible as well as his penetrating runs from midfield that usually creates danger in the opposing defensive line, as seen in his games wearing Man U’s red shirt.

South Korea’s best chance will probably lie in dominating the midfield area and restricting the supply of balls to Diego Forlan, Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez; an attacking force that is among the most effective in the World Cup to this point. As coach Tabarez argues the World Cup starts in the second phase and not many remembers those sides which won their group if they go out in the first knockout round. Uruguay must prove his coach right on Saturday in order to avoid becoming a mere footnote in the summary of this tournament.

My prediction: 1-1
