Tim Howard and his fellow Everton teammates grabbed a convincing 2-0 win at Villa Park earlier today as Roberto Martinez seems to be settling in quite nicely on Merseyside. The story of the match could have been much different though had prolific Villa forward Cristian Benteke smashed home a penalty on 8 minutes, instead of having saved by the bearded American Howard. Indeed it was a sensational stop from Howard as he got an outstretched hand to the shot and parried wide of the right hand post. That save was only the first for Howard in the half as he turned up to stop several other efforts from Andreas Weimann and Benteke again amongst other players to keep the match goalless headed into the second half.
Howard’s counterpart on the day, fellow American Brad Guzan, was equally impressive in between the sticks as he made a couple point blank stops to deny Everton’s Romelu Lukaku, although the Chelsea loanee broke through on 68 minutes to nab a lead for the Toffees. Villa threatened a couple more times after that, but a goal from Leon Osman 9 minutes from time put Paul Lambert’s side away for good.
