Argentina make the long trip to Madrid to face Spain in this International friendly match, with Argetine legend Diego Maradona returning to the country where he played for Barcelona in part of his incredible career. Maradona has been under huge pressure under manager of Argentina, but now the team has finally qualified for the 2010 World Cup Finals perhaps him and his players can relax at last.
Spain’s qualification was a much simpler affair, winning all 10 matches in their group and only letting in 5 goals. With the Euro Finals already under their belt, Spain are considered to be one of the best sides in the world and will probably be the favourites to win the 2010 World Cup, along with Brazil.
Spanish manager and former Real Madrid headcoach Vicente Del Bosque returns to Madrid in charge of Spain for this match with Argentina, and he has called up the much in-form Sevilla winger Jesus Navas. Navas has struggled previously when asked to play for Spain when playing far away as he often gets anxiety attacks, so he should play-well here if he is to be in the squad for the World Cup.
However Spain will also be without star striker Fernando Torres who is injured, as are Marcos Senna and Santi Cazorla. The Spanish squad should still have enough class to match and probably overcome Argentina, with the likes of David Villa, Andres Iniesta, Xavi, Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Carlos Puyol etc in their side.
Argentina will be without Championship side Newcastle’s midfielder Jonas Gutierrez who is out injured. Ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid defender Gabriel Heinze is also out with injury, as is another Newcastle player, Fabricio Coloccini.
Many Argentina players already play in the Spanish league with the likes of Pablo Aimar, Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain, Aguero and Maxi Rodriguez all having links with La Liga. This should make for an exciting, fast-paced and very attacking match between two very passionate and talented sides – Spain and Argentina.
